Vernon Dixon to speak on clean energy at TC Democrats’ meeting

Dr. Vernon Dixon of Citizens’ Climate Lobby will be the guest speaker when Towns County Democrats hold their monthly meeting on Thursday, March 9, at 5:30 p.m. at the county Civic Center in Hiawassee.

Dr. Dixon will speak about clean energy in its present state of development and how it can benefit people individually and as a nation and world.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is an international non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots organization whose aim is to educate people about clean energy and climate change and to promote legislation that can help convert rapidly to clean energy while growing the economy at the same time. With 542 active local chapters in the United States, Citizens’ Climate Lobby includes a local chapter comprising Hiawassee, and Blairsville, Georgia, and Hayesville, Murphy, and Andrews, North Carolina. The organization trains and supports volunteers to build relationships with elected officials, the media, and their local community.

Dr. Dixon, 77, was raised in the small southwest Georgia town of Quitman. He is a medical doctor and a board-certified adult psychiatrist and child and adolescent psychiatrist trained at the Medical College of Georgia and University of Florida Medical Center. He practiced what he calls his unique brand of Christian psychiatry in Albany and Blairsville until his retirement in 2014.

Married to Mary Joyce for almost 54 years and the father of three sons, Dr. Dixon attends St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Blairsville. A cancer survivor, Dr. Dixon said his foundational Christian faith led him to his passion for creation care as the best way to care for people.

Towns County Democrats meet the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the county Civic Center, 67 Lakeview Circle. Also at Thursday’s meeting, the group will continue its discussion of potential local projects.
